Water
This year’s tough on water—
has been for a while in places.
Everyone wants it and talks about dry
as never seen like this before.
Almonds and asparagus, lemons and oranges,
take you pick…
Everything is thirsty…somewhere
in the world
weather needs to change:
skies open, mouths form O’s
drink deep from a downpour
that feeds cotton, lentils,
barley, wheat, sugar beets,
roots of things.
In Syria
so much dust and ash
wailing and witnessing
wounding and wandering
while a river of bodies
seek confluence with peace.
