Apprenticeship of Grief
In the synodic eloquence of love,
there is a limbic resonance,
a reverberation
that softly announces life.
Sings disputations against sorrow,
as joy bids its return to the trees . . .
slowly.
Gravity releases the sun,
now rising higher
into the late winter sky.
While your distant voice sings
color into the darkness,
I try softer,
in the delicate wandering mist
of mourning.
There are no enemies inside,
just the remembrance of stars
kindled by that distant song.
This apprenticeship of grief
stretches a life wide open,
then coaxes into good humor
gradually, over time.
As the beckoning sun ascends,
welcoming me home
again and again.
