Sweetness in Iowa

Long black hair and beautiful dark skin
That is what sweetness looks like

Walking to our table something was off.
People covered eyes and moved away.
Pure darkness entered the room, they were wrong
Sweetness

By the color of her skin they think they know everything
Evil
Missing the sweetness

In a small town. Iowa where the sweetness stands out a little too much.
Her flame burned out as they blocked the oxygen
Sweetness turned into bitter fear
Not rage but pure fear

Evil
She has to be bad because of her looks
They don’t know that this strong powerful woman is-
Sweetness

But glances and simple movement strip her naked
The color of her skin shouldn’t define her life
You are said to not judge a book by a cover

So why are you judging her
You don’t know her story
Evil
Like the every villain dark and scary
But she is
Sweetness

Her head bowed as we leave
Sweetness
Nowhere to be found
Quiet and afraid
I have never seen her like this

I never think twice about
Sweetness
It hits me, they think
Evil
Because of her skin

Sweetness,
Not evil
Sweetness
Not evil
Why can’t they see that
