City of Nights

Lay me down in this city of nights
Where things lost then found
carry a disease all their own
Where a stark moon stalks voices w/out lungs
     below that black underbelly
                                  of a stiletto studded sky

Where each moment stutters
                    in baptism with desire
raucous jazz pouring onto the streets
cigarettes once lit        left to burn
          under stars suffering from Alzheimers

Where the summer coils like a snake
thru the broken glass of laughter
          & backrests of bus stops
               become havens for poster childs
     & lanky, wire-rimmed men
          wearing their Marxism like measles

Lay me down in the land of pacing panthers
          where death cracks its fart
     & organized dirt
perfects the science of its sewers

Let your black holes suck me dry
     below the thousand-eyed brick mountains
Weave me in & out of traffic
     strobe lights flashing neon brilliant
from red to green to gold

Lay yourself down in this city of nights
     recharge those sun-drenched batteries
let the wet lips of electricity's kisses
     course your dark-eyed soul
till spastic memories calm to rest
          & scars transform to masterpieces
in the brilliant glare of Dawn's replenished son.
